Blog Assignment #18 by Kosuke Fujisaki

In japan, I think being a quiet means polite. For example, you don’t have to taking on the phone and you have to set your phone to manner mode. In class, most of student keep quiet don’t say opinion. Just listen. It is not so bad things for Japanese people. Sometimes, saying opinion to boss or older people is rude things. Quiet is really important in Japan. On the other hand, American people talks a lot. Every time you need have say your opinion. If you are quiet, people think you have no opinion and stupid. When I talk with American, they speaks so fast and I don’t understand what are they saying then I’m going to quiet. Then they said “are you okay? and they think I am shy. I’m used to Japanese style polite then I’m confusing when I talking with Americans. I want to be a person who saying thir opinion.

  1. Politeness varies from country to country. The style of class at school is very different. Since I was a child, I have been taught that speaking during a class was a bad thing. Some people say Japanese people are shy, but I think we are just not accustomed to American style. It is hard to change our behavior immediately!

  2. I definitely agree with the fact that in America if you do not share your opinion they assume you do not have one. We are encouraged from an early age to give our opinions and even receive "points" on our grades for "class participation", which means we must talk and give our opinions.
