Blog Assignment #5 by Nanako Suzuki

Our volunteer activety at Willowbrook was so fun.
We visit Willowbrook every twice a week, and we taught them how to play Origami, Fukuwarai, and Kendama so far. I didn’t have any opportunities that teaching Japanese culture when I was in Japan, because everyone already know that. It’s not special things for Japanese. But American people is surprised about Japanese culture every time, and I understood Japanese culture is special for foreigners.
Teaching traditional play of Japan was not so difficult, because I can show them how to play by gesture. But listening to their talking was so difficult, because they don’t speak clearly. I thought same things when I talked with a girl who is five years old yesterday. So I’d like to get used to English sounds. We will visit there again tomorrow. Then, we will eat riceball and miso-soup with them on next week. I’m looking forward to eat Japanese food with them.

  1. I understand what you mean. It is hard for us to understand what local people are saying because their pronunciation is not as clear as English teachers. Anyway I am happy to hear that you are enjoying the activity so far!
